Annular parachute

A purpose-built annular canopy that functions as a net: over 40 m² of effective area from under 1.5 litres of packed volume, deployed in under 0.5 seconds.

The challenge

Designing a large, highly reliable canopy with minimal aerodynamic drag presents a significant engineering challenge. The system had to provide a stable, consistently deployed canopy, achieving the largest possible effective area while simultaneously generating the lowest drag feasible.

In addition, the canopy was required to deploy extremely rapidly, be stored within a very small compartment and remain lightweight, without compromising reliability or performance.

The solution

APCO addressed this challenge by developing a dedicated canopy design, focusing on deployment behavior, geometric efficiency and overall system performance.

Unique and purpose-built design

A specially engineered annular canopy geometry was developed to maximize the effective deployed area while maintaining low aerodynamic drag, ensuring high reliability and repeatable opening performance. This purpose-built design enables the canopy to behave as a net-like structure, optimized for rapid surface area deployment rather than controlled descent.

Versatile canopy configuration

The canopy was designed with a configurable geometry that allows adjustment of its angle in order to control and minimize aerodynamic drag, enabling optimization of the functional area-to-drag ratio while maintaining a reliable and consistent opening across operational conditions.

Lightweight and high-strength materials

The canopy is manufactured from lightweight, high-strength materials, providing an optimal balance between structural strength, durability and minimal weight, while enabling compact packing and integration into platforms with strict size and mass constraints.

Results

  • Demonstrated consistent and repeatable canopy opening with deployment times of < 0.5 seconds from release to full inflation.
  • Achieved a net-like effective deployed area exceeding 40 m², while fitting into a compact containment volume of less than 1.5 liters.
  • Reduced deployment loads by up to 80% compared to conventional full-canopy designs, due to the optimized annular geometry.

Testing and validation

Comprehensive testing and validation were conducted under confidential operational conditions, evaluating performance across multiple deployment scenarios. Trials consistently demonstrated rapid, stable canopy deployment, effective net-like surface formation and predictable system behavior.

This development confirms that advanced annular canopy concepts can be successfully implemented for large-area, net-like aerial deployment, opening new possibilities for compact and highly reliable airborne surface-deployment applications in defense and related fields.

Frequently asked

Asked in technical terms.

What is an annular canopy?

An annular canopy is a ring-shaped textile structure that deploys into a large effective surface area. In APCO’s design, it functions as a net-like canopy, optimized for rapid deployment and predictable surface formation rather than controlled descent. Its effective area exceeds 40 m², from a containment volume of less than 1.5 liters.

How is an annular canopy different from a parachute?

Parachutes are designed for controlled descent and landing, whereas APCO’s annular canopy is designed for surface deployment, forming a net-like structure without steering, glide or landing control. Its annular geometry maximizes effective area at low drag and reduces deployment loads by up to 80% compared to conventional full-canopy designs.

How quickly does the annular canopy deploy?

The annular canopy is engineered for sub-second deployment, allowing the net-like surface to form rapidly after release, depending on configuration and operational conditions. Testing demonstrated deployment times of less than 0.5 seconds from release to full inflation, with consistent and repeatable canopy opening across multiple deployment scenarios.
